When I sit down to paint, surrounded by the tranquil beauty of Maui, a feeling washes over me – a sensation of complete, expansive peace. A wondrous gratitude to the wide ocean and endless skies of the Pacific that have captivated me for so long.
In this piece, I am trying to capture the sense of peace and gratitude. The lighter, translucent colors invoke the early hours of the day, while the shape of the Keawe trees tell their own story of resilience and strength: These trees are shaped by the unforgiving trade winds and the arid, sandy soil into which they must take root. I enjoy the contrast of their Zen-like resilience against the peacefulness of the magical Hawaiian sunrise.
